ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS

UNIT DESCRIPTION

This unit will introduce the students to concepts of using and managing accounting information systems and cloud technologies. Specifically, students will develop knowledge about cloud technologies to understand how it is enabling the companies and accountants with better and faster access to business information that they can use to advise clients. This includes analysing the data and information to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of a business’s operating systems, processes and communications channels. This unit includes accounting information systems and their application to solve business problems. Students will explore how accounting information is used, how information systems are designed, including how processes are documented. The unit examines how accounting information systems are documented and identifies the internal controls of such systems. It explores various elements and stages of the transactions cycle and describes how accounting information is used, collected, maintained and protected from modern cyber threats.

This unit introduces accounting information systems and information communication technology, as well as their design and use. It covers the key accounting systems and processes which support an organisation's business and enhance its decision-making capabilities. Students will gain a foundational understanding of the underlying information technologies and topics covered including emerging technologies and business models’ technologies. Students will interact with popular accounting information systems during this unit.

UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Examine the impact of ICT on an organisation's environment and business model, and how it supports data analysis and decision making in achieving organisational goals and governance

  • Analyse how ICT supports the identification, reporting and management of risk in an organisation and how it can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of an organisation's systems and processes and evaluate systems development methodologies and the role of accountants in system development projects

  • Interpret the role of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Database Management System, Blockchain and Robotic Process Automation in organisations and evaluate the ethical and security issues and their implications to accountants and accounting information systems

  • Explain how ICT is used to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of communication 

  • Analyse the adequacy of ICT processes and controls and identify the improvements of ICT in organisation and analyse key business processes and evaluate risks and controls associated with these processes.
