UNIT CODE: LAW201
CORPORATIONS LAW
UNIT DESCRIPTION
This course is concerned with the legal nature of company in Australia. There are nearly 3 million companies in Australia, and as such the company is perhaps the most significant and relevant form of business structure in the present day. This course will equip students with an understanding of company in terms of its legal basis in both common law and statute. Students will explore the characteristics of company in comparison to other business structures (such as partnership). Students will explore in- depth, the various practical requirements for the registration, operation, and termination of a company. Students should therefore be able to gain an appreciation of how to operate a company in compliance with the law.
The delivery of the unit incorporates a range of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, tutorials, workshops, class discussions, in-class activities and independent student research and reading. Each week will commence with a tutorial where selected homework questions from the previous week will be discussed and students will work through unseen material to ensure all concepts are understood. This will be followed by a lecture covering the material for that week, which will include time in class for students to participate and complete workshop style activities.
